takes a covert bribe

Bribery was forbidden in Israel because it corrupted those entrusted with judgment and especially endangered the poor, innocent, and powerless (Exodus 23:8; Deuteronomy 16:19). The secrecy of the payment exposes deliberate deceit rather than a momentary lapse in judgment.
