Daniel 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank… Two arguments may be drawn from this passage, to commend the cultivation of religious character, to those who are engaged in the business of secular education. 1. They will find, as Daniel did, that religion is an aid to study. When she takes up her habitation in the heart, she will keep the soul calm, the reason clear, the feelings fresh, the taste pure, and secure the Divine blessing on diligence. The objects which religion presents to the mind are the most sublime that can be contemplated, and nourish the heart equally with the understanding. 2. The excellent character of these youths was the direct mean of their success in life. (T. White.)
