Final Perseverance
Matthew 10:22
And you shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endures to the end shall be saved.

It cannot be guaranteed by —

1. Habit, which may extend only to the outer framework, and not to the spirit, motive, temper of the religious life.

2. Determination. The will can do almost everything except be sure of itself amid circumstances which go against the grain.

3. Indefectible Grace. This doctrine is no part of the New Testament teaching. It reduces the sacraments and ordinances of religion to mere charms. It brings probation to an end, for it practically abolishes freewill. The Christian's perseverance may be morally, but it is assuredly not mechanically, certain.

(Canon Liddon.)
