Genesis 12:1-3 Now the LORD had said to Abram, Get you out of your country, and from your kindred, and from your father's house… I. A SUMMONS WAS GIVEN TO ABRAHAM FROM THE LORD. 1. It was explicit. 2. Unmistakable. 3. Repeated. 4. Contrary to the carnal inclinations. II. THE CALL WAS SUSTAINED BY A PROMISE — the promise of guidance. The first call was to an indefinite land, the second to the land. This explains why there was a temporary residence in Haran. God did not tell him He would give him the land, but only that He would guide him to it. God does not reveal all the riches of His grace at once; that might overpower the soul. (F. Hastings.)
