Isaiah 42:1-17 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; my elect, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit on him… In the sublimest description of the servant I am unable to resist the impression that we have a presentiment of an individual, and venture to think that our general view of the servant ought to be ruled by those passages in which the enthusiasm of the author is at its height. "Servant of Jehovah" in these passages seems equivalent to "son of Jehovah" in Psalm 2:7 ("son" and "servant" being, in fact, nearly equivalent in the Old Testament), namely, the personal instrument of Israel's regeneration, or, as we may say in the broader sense of the word, the Messiah.
