5 Then my God {Elohay} put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials, and the people to be enrolled by genealogy. I found the genealogical register of those who had first returned, and I found the following written in it:

6 These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon (confusion by mixing) by Nebuchadnezzar (may Nebo protect the crown) its king. They returned to Jerusalem (city of peace) and Judah (praised), each to his own town,

7 accompanied by Zerubbabel (sown in Babylon), Jeshua (he is saved), Nehemiah (YHWH comforts), Azariah (YHWH has helped), Raamiah (thunder of YHWH), Nahamani (merciful), Mordecai (little man), Bilshan (in slander), Mispereth (number), Bigvai (in my bodies), Nehum (comfort), and Baanah . This is the count of the men of Israel (he wrestles with God):

8 the descendants of Parosh (flea), 2,172;

9 the descendants of Shephatiah (YHWH has judged), 372;

10 the descendants of Arah (traveller), 652;

11 the descendants of Pahath-moab (pit of Moab) (through the line of Jeshua (he is saved) and Joab (YHWH is father)), 2,818;

12 the descendants of Elam (eternity), 1,254;

13 the descendants of Zattu (brightness of him), 845;

14 the descendants of Zaccai (pure), 760;

15 the descendants of Binnui (Bani), 648;

16 the descendants of Bebai (my cavities), 628;

17 the descendants of Azgad (Gad is mighty), 2,322;

18 the descendants of Adonikam (my lord arose), 667;

39 The priests: the descendants of Jedaiah (YHWH has known) (through the house of Jeshua (he is saved)), 973;

41 the descendants of Pashhur (freedom), 1,247;

42 and the descendants of Harim (dedicated), 1,017.

43 The Levites: the descendants of Jeshua (he is saved) (through Kadmiel (God is the ancient one), through the line of Hodevah (Hodaviah) 74.

44 The singers: the descendants of Asaph (gatherer), 148.

45 The gatekeepers: the descendants of Shallum (retribution), the descendants of Ater (binder), the descendants of Talmon (oppressor), the descendants of Akkub (insidious), the descendants of Hatita (exploring), and the descendants of Shobai (glorious), 138 in all.

46 The temple servants \The Nethinim/: the descendants of Ziha (parched), the descendants of Hasupha (stripped), the descendants of Tabbaoth (rings),

47 the descendants of Keros (ankle), the descendants of Sia (Siaha), the descendants of Padon (ransom),

48 the descendants of Lebanah (moon-white), the descendants of Hagabah (locust), the descendants of Shalmai (my thanks),

49 the descendants of Hanan (he is merciful), the descendants of Giddel (very great), the descendants of Gahar (hiding place),

50 the descendants of Reaiah (YHWH has seen), the descendants of Rezin (firm), the descendants of Nekoda (distinguished),

51 the descendants of Gazzam (devouring), the descendants of Uzza (strength), the descendants of Paseah (limper),

52 the descendants of Besai (my treading), the descendants of Meunim (habitations), the descendants of Nephushesim (Nephusim),

53 the descendants of Bakbuk (bottle), the descendants of Hakupha (bent), the descendants of Harhur (inflammation),

54 the descendants of Bazlith (Bazluth), the descendants of Mehida (famous / noble), the descendants of Harsha (mute),

55 the descendants of Barkos (the son cut off), the descendants of Sisera (battle array), the descendants of Temah (laughter),

56 the descendants of Neziah (pre-eminent), and the descendants of Hatipha (seized).

57 The descendants of the servants of Solomon (peace): the descendants of Sotai (changeful), the descendants of Sophereth (writing), the descendants of Perida (Peruda),

58 the descendants of Jaala (ascending), the descendants of Darkon (scatterer), the descendants of Giddel (very great),

59 the descendants of Shephatiah (YHWH has judged), the descendants of Hattil (doubtful), the descendants of Pochereth-hazzebaim (here the cutting off), and the descendants of Amon (Ami).

60 The temple servants and descendants of the servants of Solomon (peace) numbered 392 in all.

61 The following came up from Tel-melah (mound of salt), Tel-harsha (mound of the deaf mute), Cherub (blessing), Addon (Addan), and Immer (he has said), but they could not prove that their families were descended from Israel (he wrestles with God):

62 the descendants of Delaiah (YHWH has drawn), the descendants of Tobiah (YHWH is good), and the descendants of Nekoda (distinguished), 642 in all.

63 And from among the priests: the descendants of Hobaiah (YHWH has hidden), the descendants of Hakkoz (thorn), and the descendants of Barzillai (my iron) (who had married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite (rocky region) and was called by their name).

64 These men searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean.

65 The governor ordered them not to eat the most holy things until there was a priest to consult the Urim (lights) and Thummim \Lights and Perfections/.

66 The whole assembly numbered 42,360,

67 in addition to their 7,337 menservants and maidservants, as well as their 245 male and female singers.

68 They had 736 horses, 245 mules,

69 435 camels, and 6,720 donkeys.

70 Some of the heads of the families contributed to the project. The governor gave to the treasury 1,000 darics of gold <18.5 lb / 8.4 kg>, 50 bowls, and 530 priestly garments.

71 And some of the heads of the families gave to the treasury for the project 20,000 darics of gold <370.4 lb / 168 kg> and 2,200 minas of silver <1.38 t / 1.25 mt>.

72 The rest of the people gave a total of 20,000 darics of gold, 2,000 minas of silver <1.26 t / 1.14 mt>, and 67 priestly garments.

73 So the priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, and temple servants, along with some of the people and the rest of the Israelites (God prevails), settled in their own towns. And by the seventh month the Israelites had settled in their towns.
