1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night, and said to him: Rabbi, we know that thou hast come as a teacher from God; for no man can do these signs which thou doest, unless God be with him. 3 Jesus answered and said to him: Verily, verily I say to you, unless a man be born again, he can not see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus said to him: How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter his mother's womb the second time, and be born? 5 Jesus answered: Verily, verily I say to you, unless a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he can not enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is begotten of the flesh, is flesh; and that which is begotten of the Spirit, is spirit.
