1 These were the sons of Israel (he wrestles with God): Reuben (behold a son), Simeon (heard), Levi (joined to), Judah (praised), Issachar (there is recompense), Zebulun (exalted), 2 Dan (He has judged), Joseph (YHWH has added), Benjamin (son of the right hand), Naphtali (wrestling), Gad (troop), and Asher (happy). 3 The sons of Judah (praised): Er (awake), Onan (strong), and Shelah (a petition). These three were born to him by Bath-shua (wealth) the Canaanite (merchant). Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD {YHWH}. So the LORD put him to death. 4 Tamar (palm-tree), Judah’s daughter-in-law, bore to him Perez (breaking out) and Zerah (rising).
