So is the one coming in to the wife of his neighbor; anyone who touches her shall not be innocent. | So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife; none who touches her will go unpunished. | So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished. |
They do not despise the thief if he steals to fill his soul when he is hungry, | People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his appetite when he is hungry, | People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving. |
and having been found, he must repay sevenfold; all the wealth of his house he must give. | but if he is caught, he will pay sevenfold; he will give all the goods of his house. | Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house. |
The one committing adultery with a woman is lacking of heart; he does it, destroying his own soul. | He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself. | But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself. |
He finds only a stroke and shame, and his reproach is not wiped away. | He will get wounds and dishonor, and his disgrace will not be wiped away. | Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away. |
