A deceitful balance is an abomination before the Lord: and a just weight is his will. A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is his delight. The LORD detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him.
Where pride is, there also shall be reproach: but where humility is, there also is wisdom. When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom. When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
The simplicity of the just shall guide them: and the deceitfulness of the wicked shall destroy them. The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them. The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.
Riches shall not profit in the day of revenge: but justice shall deliver from death. Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death. Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.
The justice of the upright shall make his way prosperous: and the wicked man shall fall by his own wickedness. The righteousness of the blameless keeps his way straight, but the wicked falls by his own wickedness. The righteousness of the blameless makes their paths straight, but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness.
The justice of the righteous shall deliver them: and the unjust shall be caught in their own snares. The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the treacherous are taken captive by their lust. The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires.
When the wicked man is dead, there shall be no hope any more: and the expectation of the solicitous shall perish. When the wicked dies, his hope will perish, and the expectation of wealth perishes too. Hopes placed in mortals die with them; all the promise of their power comes to nothing.
The just is delivered out of distress: and the wicked shall be given up for him. The righteous is delivered from trouble, and the wicked walks into it instead. The righteous person is rescued from trouble, and it falls on the wicked instead.
The dissembler with his mouth deceiveth his friend: but the just shall be delivered by knowledge. With his mouth the godless man would destroy his neighbor, but by knowledge the righteous are delivered. With their mouths the godless destroy their neighbors, but through knowledge the righteous escape.
When it goeth well with the just the city shall rejoice: and when the wicked perish there shall be praise. When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices, and when the wicked perish there are shouts of gladness. When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices; when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy.
By the blessing of the just the city shall be exalted: and by the mouth of the wicked it shall be overthrown. By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is overthrown. Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.
