1 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, The LORD said to Moses and Aaron:
2 All the children of Israel shall camp by their troops, ensigns, and standards, and the houses of their kindreds, round about the tabernacle of the covenant. “The people of Israel shall camp each by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers’ houses. They shall camp facing the tent of meeting on every side. “The Israelites are to camp around the tent of meeting some distance from it, each of them under their standard and holding the banners of their family.”
3 On the east Juda shall pitch his tents by the bands of his army: and the prince of his sons shall be Nahasson the son of Aminadab. Those to camp on the east side toward the sunrise shall be of the standard of the camp of Judah by their companies, the chief of the people of Judah being Nahshon the son of Amminadab, On the east, toward the sunrise, the divisions of the camp of Judah are to encamp under their standard. The leader of the people of Judah is Nahshon son of Amminadab.
4 And the whole sum of the fighting men of his stock, were seventy-four thousand six hundred. his company as listed being 74,600. His division numbers 74,600.
5 Next unto him they of the tribe of Issachar encamped, whose prince was Nathanael, the son of Suar. Those to camp next to him shall be the tribe of Issachar, the chief of the people of Issachar being Nethanel the son of Zuar, The tribe of Issachar will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Issachar is Nethanel son of Zuar.
6 And the whole number of his fighting men were fifty-four thousand four hundred. his company as listed being 54,400. His division numbers 54,400.
7 In the tribe of Zabulon the prince was Eliab the son of Helon. Then the tribe of Zebulun, the chief of the people of Zebulun being Eliab the son of Helon, The tribe of Zebulun will be next. The leader of the people of Zebulun is Eliab son of Helon.
8 And all the army of fighting men of his stock, were fifty-seven thousand four hundred. his company as listed being 57,400. His division numbers 57,400.
9 All that were numbered in the camp of Juda, were a hundred and eighty-six thousand four hundred: and they by their troops shall march first. All those listed of the camp of Judah, by their companies, were 186,400. They shall set out first on the march. All the men assigned to the camp of Judah, according to their divisions, number 186,400. They will set out first.
10 In the camp of the sons of Ruben, on the south side, the prince shall be Elisur the son of Sedeur: “On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben by their companies, the chief of the people of Reuben being Elizur the son of Shedeur, On the south will be the divisions of the camp of Reuben under their standard. The leader of the people of Reuben is Elizur son of Shedeur.
11 And the whole army of his fighting men, that were numbered, were forty-six thousand five hundred. his company as listed being 46,500. His division numbers 46,500.
12 Beside him camped they of the tribe of Simeon: whose prince was Salamiel the son of Surisaddai. And those to camp next to him shall be the tribe of Simeon, the chief of the people of Simeon being Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai, The tribe of Simeon will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Simeon is Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.
13 And the whole army of his fighting men, that were numbered, were fifty-nine thousand three hundred. his company as listed being 59,300. His division numbers 59,300.
14 In the tribe of Gad the prince was Eliasaph the son of Duel. Then the tribe of Gad, the chief of the people of Gad being Eliasaph the son of Reuel, The tribe of Gad will be next. The leader of the people of Gad is Eliasaph son of Deuel.
15 And the whole army of his fighting men that were numbered, were forty- five thousand six hundred and fifty. his company as listed being 45,650. His division numbers 45,650.
16 All that were reckoned up in the camp of Ruben, were a hundred and fifty-one thousand four hundred and fifty, by their troops: they shall march in the second place. All those listed of the camp of Reuben, by their companies, were 151,450. They shall set out second. All the men assigned to the camp of Reuben, according to their divisions, number 151,450. They will set out second.
17 And the tabernacle of the testimony shall be carried by the officers of the Levites and their troops. As it shall be set up, so shall it be taken down. Every one shall march according to their places, and ranks. “Then the tent of meeting shall set out, with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps; as they camp, so shall they set out, each in position, standard by standard. Then the tent of meeting and the camp of the Levites will set out in the middle of the camps. They will set out in the same order as they encamp, each in their own place under their standard.
18 On the west side shall be the camp of the sons of Ephraim, whose prince was Elisama, the son of Ammiud. “On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim by their companies, the chief of the people of Ephraim being Elishama the son of Ammihud, On the west will be the divisions of the camp of Ephraim under their standard. The leader of the people of Ephraim is Elishama son of Ammihud.
19 The whole army of his fighting men, that were numbered, were forty thousand five hundred. his company as listed being 40,500. His division numbers 40,500.
20 And with them the tribe of the sons of Manasses, whose prince was Gamaliel the son of Phadassur. And next to him shall be the tribe of Manasseh, the chief of the people of Manasseh being Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur, The tribe of Manasseh will be next to them. The leader of the people of Manasseh is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.
21 And the whole army of his fighting men, that were numbered, were thirty-two thousand two hundred. his company as listed being 32,200. His division numbers 32,200.
22 In the tribe of the sons of Benjamin the prince was Abidan the son of Gedeon. Then the tribe of Benjamin, the chief of the people of Benjamin being Abidan the son of Gideoni, The tribe of Benjamin will be next. The leader of the people of Benjamin is Abidan son of Gideoni.
23 And the whole army of his fighting men, that were reckoned up, were thirty-five thousand four hundred. his company as listed being 35,400. His division numbers 35,400.
24 All that were numbered in the camp of Ephraim, were a hundred and eight thousand one hundred by their troops: they shall march in the third place. All those listed of the camp of Ephraim, by their companies, were 108,100. They shall set out third on the march. All the men assigned to the camp of Ephraim, according to their divisions, number 108,100. They will set out third.
25 On the north side camped the sons of Dan: whose prince was Ahiezar the son of Ammisaddai. “On the north side shall be the standard of the camp of Dan by their companies, the chief of the people of Dan being Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai, On the north will be the divisions of the camp of Dan under their standard. The leader of the people of Dan is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.
26 The whole army of his fighting men, that were numbered, were sixty-two thousand seven hundred. his company as listed being 62,700. His division numbers 62,700.
27 Beside him they of the tribe of Aser pitched their tents: whose prince was Phegiel the son of Ochran. And those to camp next to him shall be the tribe of Asher, the chief of the people of Asher being Pagiel the son of Ochran, The tribe of Asher will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Asher is Pagiel son of Okran.
28 The whole army of his fighting men, that were numbered, were forty-one thousand five hundred. his company as listed being 41,500. His division numbers 41,500.
29 Of the tribe of the sons of Nephtali the prince was Ahira the son of Enan. Then the tribe of Naphtali, the chief of the people of Naphtali being Ahira the son of Enan, The tribe of Naphtali will be next. The leader of the people of Naphtali is Ahira son of Enan.
30 The whole army of his fighting men, were fifty-three thousand four hundred. his company as listed being 53,400. His division numbers 53,400.
31 All that were numbered in the camp of Dan, were a hundred and fifty-seven thousand six hundred: and they shall march last. All those listed of the camp of Dan were 157,600. They shall set out last, standard by standard.” All the men assigned to the camp of Dan number 157,600. They will set out last, under their standards.
32 This is the number of the children of Israel, of their army divided according to the houses of their kindreds and their troops, six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty. These are the people of Israel as listed by their fathers’ houses. All those listed in the camps by their companies were 603,550. These are the Israelites, counted according to their families. All the men in the camps, by their divisions, number 603,550.
33 And the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel: for so the Lord had commanded Moses. But the Levites were not listed among the people of Israel, as the LORD commanded Moses. The Levites, however, were not counted along with the other Israelites, as the LORD commanded Moses.
34 And the children of Israel did according to all things that the Lord had commanded. They camped by their troops, and marched by the families and houses of their fathers. Thus did the people of Israel. According to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they camped by their standards, and so they set out, each one in his clan, according to his fathers’ house. So the Israelites did everything the LORD commanded Moses; that is the way they encamped under their standards, and that is the way they set out, each of them with their clan and family.
