1 I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of God’s wrath. 14 I am a laughingstock to all my people; they mock me in song all day long. I have become the laughingstock of all peoples, the object of their taunts all day long. 15 He has filled me with bitterness; He has intoxicated me with wormwood. He has filled me with bitterness; he has sated me with wormwood. He has filled me with bitter herbs and given me gall to drink.
16 He has ground my teeth with gravel and trampled me in the dust. He has made my teeth grind on gravel, and made me cower in ashes; He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he hath covered me with ashes. 18 So I say, “My strength has perished, along with my hope from the LORD.” so I say, “My endurance has perished; so has my hope from the LORD.” And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the LORD: So I say, “My strength has failed, And <i>so has</i> my hope from the LORD.” So I say, “My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the LORD.”
19 Remember my affliction and wandering, the wormwood and the gall. Remember my affliction and my wanderings, the wormwood and the gall! Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall. Remember my misery and my homelessness, the wormwood and bitterness. 20 Surely my soul remembers and is humbled within me. My soul continually remembers it and is bowed down within me. My soul hath <i>them</i> still in remembrance, and is humbled in me. My soul certainly remembers, And is bent over within me. I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me.
21 Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope: But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. I recall this to my mind, Therefore I wait. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope:
22 Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; <i>It is of</i> the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. The LORD’S acts of mercy indeed do not end, For His compassions do not fail. Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness! they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. <i>They are</i> new every morning: great <i>is</i> thy faithfulness. <i>They</i> are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. For if He causes grief, Then He will have compassion In proportion to His abundant mercy. Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love.
33 For He does not willingly afflict or grieve the sons of men. for he does not afflict from his heart or grieve the children of men. For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men. 35 to deny a man justice before the Most High, to deny a man justice in the presence of the Most High, To turn aside the right of a man before the face of the most High, To deprive a man of justice In the presence of the Most High, to deny people their rights before the Most High,
36 to subvert a man in his lawsuit— of these the Lord does not approve. to subvert a man in his lawsuit, the Lord does not approve. To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not. To defraud someone in his lawsuit— <i>Of these things</i> the Lord does not approve. to deprive them of justice— would not the Lord see such things?
37 Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has ordained it? Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it? Who <i>is</i> he <i>that</i> saith, and it cometh to pass, <i>when</i> the Lord commandeth <i>it</i> not? Who is there who speaks and it comes to pass, Unless the Lord has commanded <i>it?</i> Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it?
38 Do not both adversity and good come from the mouth of the Most High? Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that good and bad come? Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good? <i>Is it</i> not from the mouth of the Most High That both adversity and good proceed? Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come?
39 Why should any mortal man complain, in view of his sins? Why should a living man complain, a man, about the punishment of his sins? Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins? Of what can <i>any</i> living mortal, <i>or any</i> man, Complain in view of his sins? Why should the living complain when punished for their sins?
40 Let us examine and test our ways, and turn back to the LORD. Let us test and examine our ways, and return to the LORD! Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD. Let’s examine and search out our ways, And let’s return to the LORD. Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD.
41 Let us lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven: Let us lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven: Let us lift up our heart with <i>our</i> hands unto God in the heavens. 48 Streams of tears flow from my eyes over the destruction of the daughter of my people. my eyes flow with rivers of tears because of the destruction of the daughter of my people. 51 My eyes bring grief to my soul because of all the daughters of my city. my eyes cause me grief at the fate of all the daughters of my city. 52 Without cause my enemies hunted me like a bird. “I have been hunted like a bird by those who were my enemies without cause; Mine enemies chased me sore, like a bird, without cause. 53 They dropped me alive into a pit and cast stones upon me. they flung me alive into the pit and cast stones on me; They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me. They have silenced me in the pit And have thrown stones on me. They tried to end my life in a pit and threw stones at me;
54 The waters flowed over my head, and I thought I was going to die. water closed over my head; I said, ‘I am lost.’ Waters flowed over mine head; <i>then</i> I said, I am cut off. Waters flowed over my head; I said, “I am cut off!” the waters closed over my head, and I thought I was about to perish.
55 I called on Your name, O LORD, out of the depths of the Pit. “I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit; I called upon thy name, O LORD, out of the low dungeon. I called on Your name, LORD, Out of the lowest pit. I called on your name, LORD, from the depths of the pit.
56 You heard my plea: “Do not ignore my cry for relief.” you heard my plea, ‘Do not close your ear to my cry for help!’ Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry. You have heard my voice, “Do not cover Your ear from my <i>plea for</i> relief, From my cry for help.” You heard my plea: “Do not close your ears to my cry for relief.”
57 You drew near when I called on You; You said, “Do not be afraid.” You came near when I called on you; you said, ‘Do not fear!’ Thou drewest near in the day <i>that</i> I called upon thee: thou saidst, Fear not. You came near on the day I called to You; You said, “Do not fear!” You came near when I called you, and you said, “Do not fear.”
58 You defend my cause, O Lord; You redeem my life. “You have taken up my cause, O Lord; you have redeemed my life. O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life. Lord, You have pleaded my soul’s cause; You have redeemed my life. You, Lord, took up my case; you redeemed my life.
59 You have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me; vindicate my cause! You have seen the wrong done to me, O LORD; judge my cause. O LORD, thou hast seen my wrong: judge thou my cause. LORD, You have seen my oppression; Judge my case. LORD, you have seen the wrong done to me. Uphold my cause!
60 You have seen all their malice, all their plots against me. You have seen all their vengeance, all their plots against me. Thou hast seen all their vengeance <i>and</i> all their imaginations against me. You have seen all their vengeance, All their schemes against me. You have seen the depth of their vengeance, all their plots against me.
61 O LORD, You have heard their insults, all their plots against me— “You have heard their taunts, O LORD, all their plots against me. Thou hast heard their reproach, O LORD, <i>and</i> all their imaginations against me; You have heard their reproach, LORD, All their schemes against me. LORD, you have heard their insults, all their plots against me—
62 the slander and murmuring of my assailants against me all day long. The lips and thoughts of my assailants are against me all the day long. The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day. The lips of my assailants and their talk <i>Are</i> against me all day long. what my enemies whisper and mutter against me all day long.
63 When they sit and when they rise, see how they mock me in song. Behold their sitting and their rising; I am the object of their taunts. Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; I <i>am</i> their musick. Look at their sitting and their rising; I am their mocking song. Look at them! Sitting or standing, they mock me in their songs.
64 You will pay them back what they deserve, O LORD, according to the work of their hands. “You will repay them, O LORD, according to the work of their hands. Render unto them a recompence, O LORD, according to the work of their hands. You will repay them, LORD, In accordance with the work of their hands. Pay them back what they deserve, LORD, for what their hands have done.
65 Put a veil of anguish over their hearts; may Your curse be upon them! You will give them dullness of heart; your curse will be on them. Give them sorrow of heart, thy curse unto them. You will give them shamelessness of heart, Your curse will be on them. Put a veil over their hearts, and may your curse be on them!
66 You will pursue them in anger and exterminate them from under Your heavens, O LORD. You will pursue them in anger and destroy them from under your heavens, O LORD.” Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the LORD.
