1 THEN Job answered and said, Then Job answered and said: Then Job replied:
2 Why do you try to help him who is powerless? Why do you try to save the arm that has no strength? “How you have helped him who has no power! How you have saved the arm that has no strength! “How you have helped the powerless! How you have saved the arm that is feeble!
3 How have you counselled him who has no wisdom? And how have you expounded so many doctrines? How you have counseled him who has no wisdom, and plentifully declared sound knowledge! What advice you have offered to one without wisdom! And what great insight you have displayed!
4 To whom have you uttered words? And whose soul has come forth from you? With whose help have you uttered words, and whose breath has come out from you? Who has helped you utter these words? And whose spirit spoke from your mouth?
5 Behold, the mighty men shall be slain, and they shall lie down quieter than still waters. The dead tremble under the waters and their inhabitants. “The dead are in deep anguish, those beneath the waters and all that live in them.
6 Sheol is naked before him, and destruction has no covering. Sheol is naked before God, and Abaddon has no covering. The realm of the dead is naked before God; Destruction lies uncovered.
7 He stretches out the north from the empty place, and hangs the earth upon nothing. He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing. He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing.
8 He binds up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them. He binds up the waters in his thick clouds, and the cloud is not split open under them. He wraps up the waters in his clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under their weight.
9 He holds fast the covering of the firmament, and spreads his cloud upon it. He covers the face of the full moon and spreads over it his cloud. He covers the face of the full moon, spreading his clouds over it.
10 He has circled the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end. He has inscribed a circle on the face of the waters at the boundary between light and darkness. He marks out the horizon on the face of the waters for a boundary between light and darkness.
11 The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof. The pillars of heaven tremble and are astounded at his rebuke. The pillars of the heavens quake, aghast at his rebuke.
12 He rebukes the sea with his power, and by his wisdom he saves many. By his power he stilled the sea; by his understanding he shattered Rahab. By his power he churned up the sea; by his wisdom he cut Rahab to pieces.
13 By his spirit he manages the heavens; his hand slew the fleeing serpent. By his wind the heavens were made fair; his hand pierced the fleeing serpent. By his breath the skies became fair; his hand pierced the gliding serpent.
14 Lo, these are merely parts of his ways; and what evil thing have we heard against him? And the greatness of his might who can understand? Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways, and how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?” And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how faint the whisper we hear of him! Who then can understand the thunder of his power?”
