1 Then Job replied [to his friends], Then Job answered and said: Then Job replied:
2 |You have helped the person who has no power and saved the arm that isn't strong. “How you have helped him who has no power! How you have saved the arm that has no strength! “How you have helped the powerless! How you have saved the arm that is feeble!
3 You have advised the person who has no wisdom and offered so much assistance. How you have counseled him who has no wisdom, and plentifully declared sound knowledge! What advice you have offered to one without wisdom! And what great insight you have displayed!
4 To whom have you spoken [these] words, and whose spirit has spoken through you? With whose help have you uttered words, and whose breath has come out from you? Who has helped you utter these words? And whose spirit spoke from your mouth?
5 |The souls of the dead tremble beneath the water, and so do the creatures living there. The dead tremble under the waters and their inhabitants. “The dead are in deep anguish, those beneath the waters and all that live in them.
6 Sheol is naked in God's presence, and Abaddon has no clothing. Sheol is naked before God, and Abaddon has no covering. The realm of the dead is naked before God; Destruction lies uncovered.
7 |He stretches out his heavens over empty space. He hangs the earth on nothing whatsoever. He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing. He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing.
8 He holds the water in his thick clouds, and the clouds don't [even] split under its [weight]. He binds up the waters in his thick clouds, and the cloud is not split open under them. He wraps up the waters in his clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under their weight.
9 He covers his throne by spreading his cloud over it. He covers the face of the full moon and spreads over it his cloud. He covers the face of the full moon, spreading his clouds over it.
10 He marks the horizon on the surface of the water at the boundary where light meets dark. He has inscribed a circle on the face of the waters at the boundary between light and darkness. He marks out the horizon on the face of the waters for a boundary between light and darkness.
11 The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished when he yells at them. The pillars of heaven tremble and are astounded at his rebuke. The pillars of the heavens quake, aghast at his rebuke.
12 With his power he calmed the sea. With his insight he killed Rahab [the sea monster]. By his power he stilled the sea; by his understanding he shattered Rahab. By his power he churned up the sea; by his wisdom he cut Rahab to pieces.
13 With his wind the sky was cleared. With his hand he stabbed the fleeing snake. By his wind the heavens were made fair; his hand pierced the fleeing serpent. By his breath the skies became fair; his hand pierced the gliding serpent.
14 |These are only glimpses of what he does. We [only] hear a whisper of him! Who can understand the thunder of his power?| Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways, and how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?” And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how faint the whisper we hear of him! Who then can understand the thunder of his power?”
