1 Then Job answered, and said: Then Job answered and said: Then Job replied:
2 Whose helper art thou? is it of him that is weak? and dost thou hold up the arm of him that has no strength? “How you have helped him who has no power! How you have saved the arm that has no strength! “How you have helped the powerless! How you have saved the arm that is feeble!
3 To whom hast thou given counsel? perhaps to him that hath no wisdom, and thou hast shewn thy very great prudence. How you have counseled him who has no wisdom, and plentifully declared sound knowledge! What advice you have offered to one without wisdom! And what great insight you have displayed!
4 Whom hast thou desired to teach? was it not him that made life? With whose help have you uttered words, and whose breath has come out from you? Who has helped you utter these words? And whose spirit spoke from your mouth?
5 Behold the giants groan under the waters, and they that dwell with them. The dead tremble under the waters and their inhabitants. “The dead are in deep anguish, those beneath the waters and all that live in them.
6 Hell is naked before him, and there is no covering for destruction. Sheol is naked before God, and Abaddon has no covering. The realm of the dead is naked before God; Destruction lies uncovered.
7 He stretched out the north over the empty space, and hangeth the earth upon nothing. He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing. He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing.
8 He bindeth up the waters in his clouds, so that they break not out and fall down together. He binds up the waters in his thick clouds, and the cloud is not split open under them. He wraps up the waters in his clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under their weight.
9 He withholdeth the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud over it. He covers the face of the full moon and spreads over it his cloud. He covers the face of the full moon, spreading his clouds over it.
10 He hath set bounds about the waters, till light and darkness come to an end. He has inscribed a circle on the face of the waters at the boundary between light and darkness. He marks out the horizon on the face of the waters for a boundary between light and darkness.
11 The pillars of heaven tremble, and dread at his beck. The pillars of heaven tremble and are astounded at his rebuke. The pillars of the heavens quake, aghast at his rebuke.
12 By his power the seas are suddenly gathered together, and his wisdom has struck the proud one. By his power he stilled the sea; by his understanding he shattered Rahab. By his power he churned up the sea; by his wisdom he cut Rahab to pieces.
13 His spirit hath adorned the heavens, and his obstetric hand brought forth the winding serpent. By his wind the heavens were made fair; his hand pierced the fleeing serpent. By his breath the skies became fair; his hand pierced the gliding serpent.
14 Lo, these things are said in part of his ways: and seeing we have heard scarce a little drop of his word, who shall be able to behold the thunder of his greatness? Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways, and how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?” And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how faint the whisper we hear of him! Who then can understand the thunder of his power?”
