1 At that time the LORD will punish with his destructive, great, and powerful sword Leviathan the fast-moving serpent, Leviathan the squirming serpent; he will kill the sea monster. In that day the LORD with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea. In that day, the LORD will punish with his sword— his fierce, great and powerful sword— Leviathan the gliding serpent, Leviathan the coiling serpent; he will slay the monster of the sea.
2 When that time comes, sing about a delightful vineyard! In that day, “A pleasant vineyard, sing of it! In that day— “Sing about a fruitful vineyard:
3 I, the LORD, protect it; I water it regularly. I guard it night and day, so no one can harm it. I, the LORD, am its keeper; every moment I water it. Lest anyone punish it, I keep it night and day; I, the LORD, watch over it; I water it continually. I guard it day and night so that no one may harm it.
4 I am not angry. I wish I could confront some thorns and briers! Then I would march against them for battle; I would set them all on fire, I have no wrath. Would that I had thorns and briers to battle! I would march against them, I would burn them up together. I am not angry. If only there were briers and thorns confronting me! I would march against them in battle; I would set them all on fire.
5 unless they became my subjects and made peace with me; let them make peace with me. Or let them lay hold of my protection, let them make peace with me, let them make peace with me.” Or else let them come to me for refuge; let them make peace with me, yes, let them make peace with me.”
6 The time is coming when Jacob will take root; Israel will blossom and grow branches. The produce will fill the surface of the world. In days to come Jacob shall take root, Israel shall blossom and put forth shoots and fill the whole world with fruit. In days to come Jacob will take root, Israel will bud and blossom and fill all the world with fruit.
7 Has the LORD struck down Israel like he did their oppressors? Has Israel been killed like their enemies? Has he struck them as he struck those who struck them? Or have they been slain as their slayers were slain? Has the LORD struck her as he struck down those who struck her? Has she been killed as those were killed who killed her?
8 When you summon her for divorce, you prosecute her; he drives her away with his strong wind in the day of the east wind. Measure by measure, by exile you contended with them; he removed them with his fierce breath in the day of the east wind. By warfare and exile you contend with her— with his fierce blast he drives her out, as on a day the east wind blows.
9 So in this way Jacob's sin will be forgiven, and this is how they will show they are finished sinning: They will make all the stones of the altars like crushed limestone, and the Asherah poles and the incense altars will no longer stand. Therefore by this the guilt of Jacob will be atoned for, and this will be the full fruit of the removal of his sin: when he makes all the stones of the altars like chalkstones crushed to pieces, no Asherim or incense altars will remain standing. By this, then, will Jacob’s guilt be atoned for, and this will be the full fruit of the removal of his sin: When he makes all the altar stones to be like limestone crushed to pieces, no Asherah poles or incense altars will be left standing.
10 For the fortified city is left alone; it is a deserted settlement and abandoned like the desert. Calves graze there; they lie down there and eat its branches bare. For the fortified city is solitary, a habitation deserted and forsaken, like the wilderness; there the calf grazes; there it lies down and strips its branches. 11 When its branches get brittle, they break; women come and use them for kindling. For these people lack understanding, therefore the one who made them has no compassion on them; the one who formed them has no mercy on them. When its boughs are dry, they are broken; women come and make a fire of them. For this is a people without discernment; therefore he who made them will not have compassion on them; he who formed them will show them no favor. When its twigs are dry, they are broken off and women come and make fires with them. For this is a people without understanding; so their Maker has no compassion on them, and their Creator shows them no favor.
12 At that time the LORD will shake the tree, from the Euphrates River to the Stream of Egypt. Then you will be gathered up one by one, O Israelites. In that day from the river Euphrates to the Brook of Egypt the LORD will thresh out the grain, and you will be gleaned one by one, O people of Israel. In that day the LORD will thresh from the flowing Euphrates to the Wadi of Egypt, and you, Israel, will be gathered up one by one.
13 At that time a large trumpet will be blown, and the ones lost in the land of Assyria will come, as well as the refugees in the land of Egypt. They will worship the LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem. And in that day a great trumpet will be blown, and those who were lost in the land of Assyria and those who were driven out to the land of Egypt will come and worship the LORD on the holy mountain at Jerusalem. And in that day a great trumpet will sound. Those who were perishing in Assyria and those who were exiled in Egypt will come and worship the LORD on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.
