1 Ephraim chases the wind and pursues the east wind all day long; he multiplies lies and violence; he makes a covenant with Assyria and sends olive oil to Egypt. Ephraim feeds on the wind and pursues the east wind all day long; they multiply falsehood and violence; they make a covenant with Assyria, and oil is carried to Egypt. Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt. Ephraim feeds on wind, And pursues the east wind continually; He multiplies lies and violence. Moreover, he makes a covenant with Assyria, And oil is brought to Egypt. Ephraim feeds on the wind; he pursues the east wind all day and multiplies lies and violence. He makes a treaty with Assyria and sends olive oil to Egypt.
2 The LORD also brings a charge against Judah. He will punish Jacob according to his ways and repay him according to his deeds. The LORD has an indictment against Judah and will punish Jacob according to his ways; he will repay him according to his deeds. The LORD hath also a controversy with Judah, and will punish Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings will he recompense him. The LORD also has a case against Judah, And will punish Jacob according to his ways; He will repay him according to his deeds. The LORD has a charge to bring against Judah; he will punish Jacob according to his ways and repay him according to his deeds.
3 In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel, and in his vigor he wrestled with God. In the womb he took his brother by the heel, and in his manhood he strove with God. He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God: In the womb he took his brother by the heel, And in his mature strength he contended with God. In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel; as a man he struggled with God.
4 Yes, he struggled with the angel and prevailed; he wept and sought His favor; he found Him at Bethel and spoke with Him there He strove with the angel and prevailed; he wept and sought his favor. He met God at Bethel, and there God spoke with us— Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him <i>in</i> Bethel, and there he spake with us; Yes, he wrestled with the angel and prevailed; He wept and implored His favor. He found Him at Bethel, And there He spoke with us, He struggled with the angel and overcame him; he wept and begged for his favor. He found him at Bethel and talked with him there—
5 the LORD is the God of Hosts— the LORD is His name of renown. the LORD, the God of hosts, the LORD is his memorial name: Even the LORD God of hosts; the LORD <i>is</i> his memorial. And the LORD, the God of armies, The LORD is His name. the LORD God Almighty, the LORD is his name!
6 But you must return to your God, maintaining love and justice, and always waiting on your God. “So you, by the help of your God, return, hold fast to love and justice, and wait continually for your God.” Therefore turn thou to thy God: keep mercy and judgment, and wait on thy God continually. So as for you, return to your God, Maintain kindness and justice, And wait for your God continually. But you must return to your God; maintain love and justice, and wait for your God always.
7 A merchant loves to defraud with dishonest scales in his hands. A merchant, in whose hands are false balances, he loves to oppress. <i>He is</i> a merchant, the balances of deceit <i>are</i> in his hand: he loveth to oppress. A merchant, in whose hands are fraudulent balances, Loves to exploit. The merchant uses dishonest scales and loves to defraud.
8 And Ephraim boasts: “ How rich I have become! I have found wealth for myself. In all my labors, they can find in me no iniquity that is sinful.” Ephraim has said, “Ah, but I am rich; I have found wealth for myself; in all my labors they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.” And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: <i>in</i> all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that <i>were</i> sin. And Ephraim said, “I have certainly become rich, I have found wealth for myself; In all my labors they will find in me No wrongdoing, which <i>would be</i> sin.” Ephraim boasts, “I am very rich; I have become wealthy. With all my wealth they will not find in me any iniquity or sin.”
9 But I am the LORD your God ever since the land of Egypt. I will again make you dwell in tents, as in the days of the appointed feast. I am the LORD your God from the land of Egypt; I will again make you dwell in tents, as in the days of the appointed feast. And I <i>that am</i> the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt will yet make thee to dwell in tabernacles, as in the days of the solemn feast. But I <i>have been</i> the LORD your God since the land of Egypt; I will make you live in tents again, As in the days of the appointed festival. “I have been the LORD your God ever since you came out of Egypt; I will make you live in tents again, as in the days of your appointed festivals.
10 I spoke through the prophets and multiplied their visions; I gave parables through the prophets. I spoke to the prophets; it was I who multiplied visions, and through the prophets gave parables. I have also spoken by the prophets, and I have multiplied visions, and used similitudes, by the ministry of the prophets. I have also spoken to the prophets, And I provided many visions, And through the prophets I spoke in parables. I spoke to the prophets, gave them many visions and told parables through them.”
11 Is there iniquity in Gilead? They will surely come to nothing. Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal? Indeed, their altars will be heaps of stones in the furrows of the field. If there is iniquity in Gilead, they shall surely come to nothing: in Gilgal they sacrifice bulls; their altars also are like stone heaps on the furrows of the field. <i>Is there</i> iniquity <i>in</i> Gilead? surely they are vanity: they sacrifice bullocks in Gilgal; yea, their altars <i>are</i> as heaps in the furrows of the fields. Is there injustice <i>in</i> Gilead? Certainly they are worthless. In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls, Yes, their altars are like stone heaps Beside the furrows of a field. Is Gilead wicked? Its people are worthless! Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal? Their altars will be like piles of stones on a plowed field.
12 Jacob fled to the land of Aram and Israel worked for a wife— for a wife he tended sheep. Jacob fled to the land of Aram; there Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he guarded sheep. And Jacob fled into the country of Syria, and Israel served for a wife, and for a wife he kept <i>sheep</i>. Now Jacob fled to the land of Aram, And Israel worked for a wife, And for a wife he kept <i>sheep.</i> Jacob fled to the country of Aram; Israel served to get a wife, and to pay for her he tended sheep.
13 But by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet he was preserved. By a prophet the LORD brought Israel up from Egypt, and by a prophet he was guarded. And by a prophet the LORD brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved. But by a prophet the LORD brought Israel up from Egypt, And by a prophet he was protected. The LORD used a prophet to bring Israel up from Egypt, by a prophet he cared for him.
14 Ephraim has provoked bitter anger, so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt upon him and repay him for his contempt. Ephraim has given bitter provocation; so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt on him and will repay him for his disgraceful deeds. Ephraim provoked <i>him</i> to anger most bitterly: therefore shall he leave his blood upon him, and his reproach shall his Lord return unto him. Ephraim has provoked <i>God</i> to bitter anger; So his Lord will leave his guilt for bloodshed on him And bring his disgrace back to him. But Ephraim has aroused his bitter anger; his Lord will leave on him the guilt of his bloodshed and will repay him for his contempt.
