And the LORD said to her, “Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people will be stronger than the other; And the older will serve the younger.” The LORD said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”
24 When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb. When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb. And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, <i>there were</i> twins in her womb. When her days <i>leading</i> to the delivery were at an end, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 The first one came out red, covered with hair like a fur coat; so they named him Esau. The first came out red, all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau. And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he <i>was</i> faint: When Jacob had cooked a stew <i>one day,</i> Esau came in from the field and he was exhausted; Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished.
30 He said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am famished.” (That is why he was also called Edom. And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.) And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red <i>pottage</i>; for I <i>am</i> faint: therefore was his name called Edom. and Esau said to Jacob, “Please let me have a mouthful of that red stuff there, for I am exhausted.” Therefore he was called Edom <i>by</i> name. He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.)
31 “First sell me your birthright,” Jacob replied. Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. But Jacob said, “First sell me your birthright.” Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.”
32 “Look,” said Esau, “I am about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?” Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” And Esau said, Behold, I <i>am</i> at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so of what <i>use</i> then is the birthright to me?” “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”
33 “Swear to me first,” Jacob said. So Esau swore to Jacob and sold him the birthright. Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. And Jacob said, “First swear to me”; so he swore <i>an oath</i> to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave some bread and lentil stew to Esau, who ate and drank and then got up and went away. Thus Esau despised his birthright. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised <i>his</i> birthright.
