1 This is what the Lord GOD showed me: He was preparing swarms of locusts just after the king’s harvest, as the late spring crop was coming up. This is what the Lord GOD showed me: behold, he was forming locusts when the latter growth was just beginning to sprout, and behold, it was the latter growth after the king’s mowings. Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, <i>it was</i> the latter growth after the king's mowings. This is what the Lord GOD showed me, and behold, He was forming a swarm of locusts when the spring crop began to sprout. And behold, the spring crop <i>was</i> after the king’s mowing. This is what the Sovereign LORD showed me: He was preparing swarms of locusts after the king’s share had been harvested and just as the late crops were coming up.
2 And when the locusts had eaten every green plant in the land, I said, “Lord GOD, please forgive! How will Jacob survive, since he is so small?” When they had finished eating the grass of the land, I said, “O Lord GOD, please forgive! How can Jacob stand? He is so small!” And it came to pass, <i>that</i> when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he <i>is</i> small. And it came about, when it had finished eating the vegetation of the land, that I said, “Lord GOD, please pardon! How can Jacob stand? For he is small.” When they had stripped the land clean, I cried out, “Sovereign LORD, forgive! How can Jacob survive? He is so small!”
3 So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen,” He said. The LORD relented concerning this: “It shall not be,” said the LORD. The LORD repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD. The LORD relented of this. “It shall not be,” said the LORD. So the LORD relented. “This will not happen,” the LORD said.
4 This is what the Lord GOD showed me: The Lord GOD was calling for judgment by fire. It consumed the great deep and devoured the land. This is what the Lord GOD showed me: behold, the Lord GOD was calling for a judgment by fire, and it devoured the great deep and was eating up the land. Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part. So the Lord GOD showed me, and behold, the Lord GOD was calling to contend <i>with them</i> by fire, and it consumed the great deep and <i>began to</i> consume the farmland. This is what the Sovereign LORD showed me: The Sovereign LORD was calling for judgment by fire; it dried up the great deep and devoured the land.
5 Then I said, “Lord GOD, please stop! How will Jacob survive, since he is so small?” Then I said, “O Lord GOD, please cease! How can Jacob stand? He is so small!” Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he <i>is</i> small. Then I said, “Lord GOD, please stop! How can Jacob stand? For he is small.” Then I cried out, “Sovereign LORD, I beg you, stop! How can Jacob survive? He is so small!”
6 So the LORD relented from this plan. “It will not happen either,” said the Lord GOD. The LORD relented concerning this: “This also shall not be,” said the Lord GOD. The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD. The LORD relented of this. “This too shall not be,” said the Lord GOD. So the LORD relented. “This will not happen either,” the Sovereign LORD said.
7 This is what He showed me: Behold, the Lord was standing by a wall true to plumb, with a plumb line in His hand. This is what he showed me: behold, the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall <i>made</i> by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. So He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing by a vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand. This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb, with a plumb line in his hand.
8 “Amos, what do you see?” asked the LORD. “A plumb line,” I replied. “Behold,” said the Lord, “I am setting a plumb line among My people Israel; I will no longer spare them: And the LORD said to me, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said, “Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass by them; And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more: And the LORD said to me, “What do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said, “Behold I am about to put a plumb line In the midst of My people Israel. I will not spare them any longer. And the LORD asked me, “What do you see, Amos?” “A plumb line,” I replied. Then the Lord said, “Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.
9 The high places of Isaac will be deserted, and the sanctuaries of Israel will be laid waste; and I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with My sword.” the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.” And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword. “The high places of Isaac will become deserted, And the sanctuaries of Israel will be in ruins. Then I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.” “The high places of Isaac will be destroyed and the sanctuaries of Israel will be ruined; with my sword I will rise against the house of Jeroboam.”
10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent word to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words, Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words. Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words. Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent <i>word</i> to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is unable to endure all his words. Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent a message to Jeroboam king of Israel: “Amos is raising a conspiracy against you in the very heart of Israel. The land cannot bear all his words.
11 for this is what Amos has said: ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile, away from their homeland.’ ” For thus Amos has said, “‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel must go into exile away from his land.’” For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land. For this is what Amos says: ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’” For this is what Amos is saying: “’Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will surely go into exile, away from their native land.’”
12 And Amaziah said to Amos, “Go away, you seer! Flee to the land of Judah; earn your bread there and do your prophesying there. And Amaziah said to Amos, “O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, and eat bread there, and prophesy there, Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there: Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Go, you seer, flee to the land of Judah; and eat bread there and do your prophesying there! Then Amaziah said to Amos, “Get out, you seer! Go back to the land of Judah. Earn your bread there and do your prophesying there.
13 But never prophesy at Bethel again, because it is the sanctuary of the king and the temple of the kingdom.” but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.” But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it <i>is</i> the king's chapel, and it <i>is</i> the king's court. But do not prophesy at Bethel any longer, for it is a sanctuary of the king and a royal residence.” Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel, because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom.”
14 “I was not a prophet,” Amos replied, “nor was I the son of a prophet; rather, I was a herdsman and a tender of sycamore-fig trees. Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, “I was no prophet, nor a prophet’s son, but I was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs. Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I <i>was</i> no prophet, neither <i>was</i> I a prophet's son; but I <i>was</i> an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit: Then Amos replied to Amaziah, “I am not a prophet, nor am I the son of a prophet; for I am a herdsman and a grower of sycamore figs. Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees.
15 But the LORD took me from following the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to My people Israel.’ But the LORD took me from following the flock, and the LORD said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel. But the LORD took me from following the flock, and the LORD said to me, ‘Go prophesy to My people Israel.’ But the LORD took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’
16 Now, therefore, hear the word of the LORD. You say: ‘Do not prophesy against Israel; do not preach against the house of Isaac.’ Now therefore hear the word of the LORD. “You say, ‘Do not prophesy against Israel, and do not preach against the house of Isaac.’ Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not <i>thy word</i> against the house of Isaac. So now hear the word of the LORD: you are saying, ‘You shall not prophesy against Israel nor shall you prophesy against the house of Isaac.’ Now then, hear the word of the LORD. You say, “’Do not prophesy against Israel, and stop preaching against the descendants of Isaac.’
17 Therefore this is what the LORD says: ‘Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, and your sons and daughters will fall by the sword. Your land will be divided by a measuring line, and you yourself will die on pagan soil. And Israel will surely go into exile, away from their homeland.’ ” Therefore thus says the LORD: “‘Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided up with a measuring line; you yourself shall die in an unclean land, and Israel shall surely go into exile away from its land.’” Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land. Therefore, this is what the LORD says: ‘Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, your sons and your daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be parceled up by a <i>measuring</i> line, and you yourself will die upon unclean soil. Furthermore Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’” “Therefore this is what the LORD says: “’Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, and your sons and daughters will fall by the sword. Your land will be measured and divided up, and you yourself will die in a pagan country. And Israel will surely go into exile, away from their native land.’”
