New International Version | International Standard Version |
Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, | 1Now we ask you, brothers, regarding the coming of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, and our gathering together to him, |
not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us--whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter--asserting that the day of the Lord has already come. | 2not to be so quickly upset or alarmed when someone claims that we said, either by some spirit, conversation, or letter that the Day of the Lord has already come. |
Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. | 3Do not let anyone deceive you in any way, for it will not come unless the rebellion takes place first and the man of sin, who is destined for destruction, is revealed. |
He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God. | 4He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god and object of worship. As a result, he seats himself in the sanctuary of God and himself declares that he is God. |
Don't you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things? | 5Don't you remember that I repeatedly told you about these things when I was still with you? |
And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. | 6You know what it is that is now holding him back, so that he will be revealed when his time comes. |
For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. | 7For the secret of this lawlessness is already at work, but only until the person now holding it back gets out of the way. |
And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming. | 8Then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will destroy with the breath of his mouth, rendering him powerless by the manifestation of his coming. |
The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, | 9The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by the power of Satan. He will use every kind of power, including miraculous signs, lying wonders, |
and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. | 10and every type of evil to deceive those who are dying, those who refused to love the truth that would save them. |
For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie | 11For this reason, God will send them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie. |
and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness. | 12Then all who have not believed the truth but have taken pleasure in unrighteousness will be condemned. |
But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. | 13At all times we are obligated to thank God for you, brothers who are loved by the Lord, because God chose you to be the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through faith in the truth. |
He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 14With this purpose in mind, he called you through our proclamation of the gospel so that you would obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah. |
So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter. | 15So then, brothers, stand firm, and cling to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. |
May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, | 16May our Lord Jesus, the Messiah himself, and may God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, |
encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. | 17encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good action and word. |
