Job 23
KJV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
King James BibleNew Living Translation
Then Job answered and said,1Then Job spoke again:
Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning.2“My complaint today is still a bitter one, and I try hard not to groan aloud.
Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!3If only I knew where to find God, I would go to his court.
I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.4I would lay out my case and present my arguments.
I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.5Then I would listen to his reply and understand what he says to me.
Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me.6Would he use his great power to argue with me? No, he would give me a fair hearing.
There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.7Honest people can reason with him, so I would be forever acquitted by my judge.
Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him:8I go east, but he is not there. I go west, but I cannot find him.
On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him:9I do not see him in the north, for he is hidden. I look to the south, but he is concealed.
But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.10“But he knows where I am going. And when he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold.
My foot hath held his steps, his way have I kept, and not declined.11For I have stayed on God’s paths; I have followed his ways and not turned aside.
Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.12I have not departed from his commands, but have treasured his words more than daily food.
But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.13But once he has made his decision, who can change his mind? Whatever he wants to do, he does.
For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him.14So he will do to me whatever he has planned. He controls my destiny.
Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.15No wonder I am so terrified in his presence. When I think of it, terror grips me.
For God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me:16God has made me sick at heart; the Almighty has terrified me.
Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither hath he covered the darkness from my face.17Darkness is all around me; thick, impenetrable darkness is everywhere.
