Greeting to the Elect Pilgrims

1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bythynia,

2Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, to obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you^p, and peace be multiplied. chosen

A Heavenly Inheritance

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, has caused us to be born again; living

4To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fades not away, reserved in heaven for you^p, imperishable

5Who are kept by the power of God through faith to salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. protected

6Wherein you^p greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, you^p are in heaviness through manifold temptations: various testings

7That the trial of your^p faith, being much more precious than of gold that perishes, though it be tried with fire, might be found to praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

8Whom having not seen, you^p love; in whom, though now you^p see Him not, yet believing, you^p rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

9Receiving the end of your^p faith, even the salvation of your^p souls. outcome

10Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come to you^p:

11Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. ISA 53

12To whom it was revealed, that not to themselves, but to us they did minister the things, which are now reported to you^p by them that have preached the gospel to you^p with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels desire to look into. Spirit

Living Before God Our Father

13Wherefore gird up the loins of your^p mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought to you^p at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

14As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves^p according to the former lusts in your^p ignorance: conforming

15But as He which has called you^p is holy, so be you^p holy in all manner of conversation; behavior, manner of life

16Because it is written, Be you^p holy; for I am holy. LEV 11:44–45 | contained in the Scriptures

17And if you^p call on the Father, who without respect of persons judges according to every man’s work, pass the time of your^p sojourning here in fear: temporary stay (on this earth)

18Forasmuch as you^p know that you^p were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your^p vain conversation received by tradition from your^p fathers; foolish ways; inherited

19But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

20Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you^p, truly; revealed

21Who by Him do believe in God, that raised Him up from the dead, and gave Him glory; that your^p faith and hope might be in God.

The Enduring Word

22Seeing you^p have purified your^p souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit to unfeigned love of the brethren, see that you^p love one another with a pure heart fervently: cleansed; sincere, genuine

23Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which lives and abides for ever.

24For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower thereof falls away: ISA 40:6

25But the word of the Lord endures for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached to you^p.
