Truth Sought Amid Division

Synod of Bohemia (February 13, 1413)

On February 13, 1413, a national synod in Bohemia assembled to examine disputed teachings linked to the English reforming preacher John Wycliffe—teachings being circulated and defended in the land by Jan Hus. The gathering occurred in a tense hour: Prague had been placed under interdict, public worship was disrupted, and consciences were divided over what true reform should require.

Hus was absent, living in exile after fierce opposition and the turmoil that followed the interdict. Church leaders debated vigorously, yet the synod ended without agreement. The stalemate exposed how fear of unrest, political calculations, and the weight of personal conscience can fracture Christian counsel when repentance and renewal are most needed.

Wycliffe’s Influence and the Bohemian Crisis

Wycliffe (d. 1384), trained at Oxford, pressed the church to submit to the authority of Scripture, to purify its preaching, and to confront corruption that profaned Christ’s name. Some who received him emphasized biblical clarity and moral reform; others seized on more radical claims, creating suspicion and confusion. In Bohemia—where university life, noble patronage, and parish realities collided—Wycliffe’s writings became a test of whether the church would correct abuses by the Word of God or protect its standing by force.

Jan Hus: Conscience, Courage, and Patient Fidelity

Hus, known for his preaching in Prague and his desire for a cleansed church, chose loss rather than silence. Exile meant separation from his pulpit, vulnerability to slander, and uncertainty about his future, yet it also became a school of perseverance. His example stands as a sober witness that Christian courage is not loud defiance, but steady obedience when peace proves elusive.

“Peter and the other apostles replied, ‘We must obey God rather than men.’” (Acts 5:29)

“You need to persevere, so that after you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.” (Hebrews 10:36)
