March 5, 1850
Songmaker for the Gospel

Daniel Brink Towner (1850–1919)

Born March 5, 1850, in Rome, Pennsylvania, Daniel Brink Towner grew up in an America still being shaped by frontier hardship and, soon, the scars of civil conflict. The Lord formed in him a steady, disciplined musician—skilled at the organ, attentive to harmony, and unusually gifted at helping ordinary congregations sing with confidence. His “heroism” was not found in headlines but in faithful, repeated service: showing up, practicing, leading, and refusing to let music become performance rather than proclamation.

Revival Song Leader and Associate of D. L. Moody

Towner became closely associated with evangelist D. L. Moody, lending strength to gospel preaching through clear, earnest congregational singing. At revival meetings and the Northfield conferences in Northfield, Massachusetts, he helped shape an atmosphere where truth could be heard, remembered, and embraced. In those gatherings, music was not filler between sermons; it was a means of teaching and exhortation—often preparing hearts to respond in repentance and faith. His life reflected the biblical pattern: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts” (Colossians 3:16).

Moody Bible Institute and Hymn Tunes

Later, in Chicago, Towner served as music director at Moody Bible Institute, shaping generations of gospel workers with a simple conviction: worship should carry sound doctrine to the mind and warm devotion to the heart. He wrote more than 2,000 hymn tunes, including AT CALVARY (“Years I Spent in Vanity and Pride”), MOODY (“Marvelous Grace of our Loving Lord”), and TRUST AND OBEY. These songs call believers to rest in grace, to look steadily to the cross, and to walk in obedient faith—echoing Christ’s own words: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15). Through Towner’s hymns, many learned to sing not merely about religion, but about the saving work of Christ and the daily courage of following Him.
