Solemn Vows at Quebec Cathedral

Ordination at Notre‑Dame de Québec (21 Sept 1833)

On September 21, 1833, in the Cathedral of Notre‑Dame de Québec, Archbishop Joseph Signay ordained Charles Chiniquy to the priesthood. In that historic sanctuary in Old Québec—long a spiritual center for French‑speaking Canada—the laying on of hands marked a public setting apart for ministry and the care of souls. Such a moment carries solemn hope: that visible gifts will be matched by inward godliness, and that a man will shepherd others only as he himself walks in the fear of God.

Archbishop Joseph Signay

Signay, newly installed as archbishop that same year, bore the weight of overseeing clergy in a changing society. An ordaining bishop is not merely affirming talent; he is commending a life. The church’s confidence in its ministers depends on integrity that can endure pressure, praise, and temptation. “Pay close attention to your life and to your teaching. Persevere in these things, for by so doing you will save both yourself and those who hear you.” (1 Timothy 4:16)

Charles Chiniquy: Temperance and Controversy

Chiniquy later became widely known for temperance preaching, urging communities to resist drunkenness and its ruin. In that labor there was a measure of civic courage: confronting a widespread vice, calling families to sobriety, and appealing for moral reform. Yet his story also includes repeated scandals and deep conflict. He eventually left Roman Catholicism and spent years publicly denouncing the church that had ordained him, becoming a polarizing figure whose influence extended beyond Canada.

Enduring Lessons for Leaders and Believers

Chiniquy’s life warns that ministry cannot rest on eloquence, activism, or public success. The church needs courage, yes—but also humility, repentance, and accountable fellowship. The Christian aim is not to start well but to finish well, guarding the soul as carefully as the message. “No, I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.” (1 Corinthians 9:27)
