Sidney N. Correll and a Life Sent Sidney N. Correll (born May 12, 1907) Sidney N. Correll was born on May 12, 1907, in a generation that would witness world war, cultural upheaval, and unprecedented opportunity for worldwide gospel advance. Those who worked alongside him remembered a steady man—more shepherd than celebrity—who believed the Lord’s work must be carried by ordinary believers strengthened through prayer, Scripture, and obedience. In an era when travel and communication were expanding, Correll pressed the church to see open doors not as comforts, but as callings. United World Mission, Inc. (founded 1946) In 1946, in the demanding aftermath of World War II, Correll founded United World Mission, Inc. As its first General Director (1946–1971), he labored to mobilize churches and individuals for evangelism, church planting, and Christian education across many nations. The postwar world included displaced peoples, rebuilding communities, and regions newly alert to Western influence; Correll emphasized that faithful missions required both courage and humility—workers who would listen well, serve patiently, and honor local churches. He urged missionaries to live with disciplined prayer, personal holiness, and wise stewardship, knowing that endurance in the field is often tested by loneliness, sickness, financial strain, and spiritual opposition. Rather than measuring success by numbers alone, he promoted long-term faithfulness: sound doctrine taught carefully, leaders trained responsibly, and congregations strengthened to stand on their own. Legacy and Spiritual Emphases Correll’s confidence rested in the authority of Scripture and the abiding presence of Christ with His servants. He often pointed believers to the Great Commission: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations… And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:19–20). His life also reflected the quiet heroism of perseverance—steady, prayerful labor when results were slow. “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable. Always excel in the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58). Through such convictions, Correll helped widen the reach of the gospel in the modern missions era and reminded the church that Christ still calls for sacrifice, integrity, and hopeful work. |
