Mission Joined to a Global Witness Third Assembly in New Delhi (1961) On November 19, 1961, the Third Assembly of the World Council of Churches (WCC) convened in New Delhi, India, gathering churches from many nations under the theme “Jesus Christ—The Light of the World.” Meeting in a city marked by ancient faiths and modern change, delegates were reminded that Christ’s lordship is not regional but universal, calling believers to prayerful unity and practical service. The theme echoed Jesus’ own words: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). In the backdrop of newly independent India and a tense Cold War era, the assembly sought to bear public witness that the Church’s hope rests not in human systems, but in the risen Christ. Integration of the International Missionary Council A defining development at New Delhi was the integration of the International Missionary Council (IMC) into the WCC. The IMC had emerged from earlier global missionary cooperation and carried decades of organized mission labor—language study, Bible translation, training of local leaders, medical work, and church planting—often sustained through sacrifice and obscurity. Leaders such as John R. Mott had helped shape earlier missionary collaboration, and voices formed on the mission field, including Lesslie Newbigin, pressed the Church to hold unity and evangelism together rather than apart. This integration signaled that mission is not a side project for a few specialists, but a shared calling for the whole Church. Legacy: Unity, Witness, and Costly Love New Delhi honored the costly faith of missionaries and local believers who endured hardship, disease, isolation, and at times hostility, yet served with patient courage. Their heroism was not a quest for fame, but steady obedience—teaching Scripture, feeding the hungry, and proclaiming forgiveness in Jesus’ name. The assembly also kept the Great Commission in view: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20). Its enduring lesson is that Christ’s light advances through humble cooperation, clear gospel witness, repentance and holiness, and steadfast love—unity that serves truth, and service that points to the Savior. |
