Holding Fast to Biblical Order

Southern Baptist Convention, Kansas City (1984)

On June 14, 1984, messengers (voting delegates from Southern Baptist churches) gathered in Kansas City, Missouri, during a season of sharp public debate about authority, gender, and the church’s witness. Under denominational leadership and the watchful attention of media and local churches, the Convention’s floor reflected a desire to be both orderly and courageous—patient in process, yet resolved in conviction. Many pastors, laypeople, and associational leaders viewed the moment as a test of whether the church would be led by cultural momentum or by the plain reading of Scripture.

Resolution on Women and the Pastoral Office

That day the messengers adopted a resolution opposing the ordination of women to the office of pastor, appealing to the clarity and authority of Scripture, especially 1 Timothy 2:12; 3:1–7 and Titus 1:5–9. They argued that the qualifications for elder/overseer described a responsibility entrusted to qualified men, while affirming the equal value of women and men before God. One text often cited reads: “I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; she is to remain quiet” (1 Timothy 2:12). Another states, “An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife” (Titus 1:6). The resolution’s intent was not to diminish women’s gifts, but to uphold a pattern of church order believed to be established by God for the good of His people.

Faithfulness, Courage, and the Call to Serve

Supporters saw the action as a kind of steady heroism: not loud or violent, but willing to bear misunderstanding for the sake of obedience. They emphasized humility—calling churches to honor women’s discipleship, prayer, evangelism, missions, teaching of other women and children, and countless forms of leadership and service—while reserving the pastoral office for men who meet biblical qualifications. The stand continues to remind believers that fidelity is not measured by applause, but by submission to God’s Word, trusting that His design is wise, good, and ultimately for the flourishing of the church.
