Civilla D. Martin (1866–1948)

Born on August 21, 1866, in Nova Scotia, Civilla D. Martin grew up in a setting shaped by rugged coastal life and close-knit communities where the Word of God and faithful worship were steady anchors. She later served as a teacher, practicing a quiet kind of heroism: the patient, daily work of forming minds and steadying young hearts.

Her marriage to W. Stillman Martin joined pastoral ministry and music. “God Will Take Care of You” (1904)

In 1904, Civilla wrote the hymn “Be Not Dismayed, Whate’er Betide,” widely known by its refrain, “God Will Take Care of You,” with music composed by her husband. The hymn does not deny hardship; it answers hardship with a simple, steady confession of God’s providence.

Its message resonates with the Lord’s own comfort: “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).
