Jacqueline “Jackie” Means was an Indiana pastor-in-training, the wife of a truck driver, and the mother of four children. On January 1, 1977, Means was ordained a priest in the Protestant Episcopal Church, becoming the first woman in the United States to enter that office after the denomination’s 1976 decision to permit women’s ordination.
