Utengule Synod (December 17, 1976)

On December 17, 1976, believers in southwest Tanzania gathered at Utengule for a synod that formally launched their work as an organized church body. Utengule—already a familiar meeting place for worship, teaching, and mutual support—became the setting for a public act of unity. Delegates came not merely to plan, but to pray, seeking God’s guidance for a future that required both courage and order. In a region shaped by years of mission labor and growing congregational life, the synod marked a decisive step from scattered efforts to accountable, shared oversight.

The gathering affirmed that Christ’s church is not built on personality or power, but on faithful shepherding and clear responsibility. “But everything must be done in a proper and orderly manner” (1 Corinthians 14:40). Tulinawo Luhomano Msinjili

At the synod, delegates prayerfully elected Tulinawo Luhomano Msinjili as the first provincial chairman. His selection signaled the growing maturity of local leadership—shepherds raised up among the people, acquainted with their needs, language, and daily burdens. The role carried weight: guiding churches toward unity, supporting evangelistic work, and promoting disciplined care for believers.
