Faithful Witness unto Death

July 26, 1622—Martyrdom of John Mat Suzuki and Paul Tsukamoto

On July 26, 1622, in Tokugawa Japan, the believers John Mat Suzuki and Paul Tsukamoto were beheaded for confessing Jesus Christ. Summoned to renounce the faith spreading across their homeland, they refused, choosing instead to bear public witness to the Lord who had redeemed them. Their deaths stand among the early seventeenth-century executions meant to terrify the Church into silence, yet their calm steadfastness proclaimed that Christ is worthy of everything.

Tokugawa Japan’s Crackdown on the Gospel

After Christianity’s rapid growth through preaching, catechesis, and the formation of local congregations, Tokugawa authorities increasingly treated the gospel as a threat to social order and national unity. Edicts against the faith, forced denunciations, and public punishments aimed to isolate believers and sever them from shepherds and fellowship. The sword, however, could not reach the conscience. “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28)

Though little is recorded in widely accessible sources about their personal histories, their final testimony reveals what mattered most: they belonged to Christ. In an age when compliance could preserve one’s livelihood and family standing, they chose obedience over self-preservation. Their courage was not mere bravery, but reverent fear of God, anchored in the hope of resurrection. They showed that heroism in the Christian sense is not the pursuit of fame, but the refusal to deny the One who died and rose again.

Legacy of Faithfulness Under Trial

Their witness reminds the Church that suffering is not proof of God’s absence, but often the very arena where faith shines brightest. Martyrdom does not save—Christ alone saves—but it magnifies His worth and strengthens His people. “Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer… Be faithful even unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10) May their example stir believers to quiet courage, steadfast confession, and love that endures when the world demands surrender.
