Faithful Shepherd unto Death

Father Morks Khaliel Fanous

Father Morks Khaliel Fanous served as a priest at the Church of Mar Boctor in Mosha, a village in the Assiut Governorate of Upper Egypt. Remembered as a steady pastor, he labored to shepherd ordinary families in daily faithfulness—calling people to repentance, prayer, and a living hope in Christ. In sermons and counsel, he emphasized that Christian life is not merely tradition but a willing turning from sin toward the Lord, marked by humility, honesty, and devotion.

Mosha and Assiut (Upper Egypt)

Assiut has long been home to historic Christian communities alongside periods of social strain. In some seasons, open Christian witness could invite threats, misunderstanding, or violence. Mosha’s local church life therefore carried both beauty and cost: believers gathered for worship, confession, and the sacraments while also learning endurance, carefulness, and courage. The Church of Mar Boctor—named in honor of a revered martyr-saint—stood as a quiet declaration that Christ is worth public allegiance, even when public allegiance is risky.

June 30, 1991: Martyrdom

On June 30, 1991, Father Morks was martyred, sealing his ministry with blood. His death reminds the church that shepherds may be called not only to teach Christ’s cross but also to share in its suffering. Jesus prepared His disciples for this sober reality: “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:10). The martyr’s courage is not bravado; it is steadfast obedience—love that refuses to deny Christ, even under pressure.

Legacy of Faith, Forgiveness, and Courage

Father Morks’s memory encourages believers to endure with clean hands and a clear conscience, resisting bitterness and practicing forgiveness. His witness teaches that comfort is not the measure of truth, and safety is not the highest good. The Christian hope is not the absence of hardship but the presence of Christ and the certainty of His kingdom. In the words of Scripture, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7).
