A Shoreline Calling James Stewart (1831–1905) A Scottish missionary-educator, James Stewart answered the gospel’s summons to carry Christ’s name to southern Africa. His strength was not in spectacle but in steadiness: disciplined habits, careful study, and a life ordered by prayer. Scripture framed his calling—“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for Us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” (Isaiah 6:8). Stewart’s example reminds believers that obedience is often measured in years of faithful labor rather than moments of applause. Cape Town Landing (13 August 1861) On August 13, 1861, Stewart stepped ashore at Cape Town, entering a vast land marked by distance, cultural complexity, and spiritual need. The first tests were ordinary and severe: unfamiliar speech, long travel inland, and the weariness of starting again with little comfort. Yet such trials became training in dependence. His courage showed itself in patience—listening before speaking, learning before leading, and trusting God when plans moved slowly. “Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9). Lovedale Center (Eastern Cape) In the Eastern Cape, Stewart helped found and strengthen the Lovedale Center, where gospel preaching and education were joined rather than separated. Instruction in Scripture walked alongside literacy and practical skills, shaping minds while calling hearts to repentance and faith. Lovedale’s purpose was not merely to produce educated hearers, but trained servants—African teachers and evangelists equipped to carry the good news into places no foreign missionary could easily reach. This multiplication of witness reflected a shepherd’s heart: building others up, sending them out, and rejoicing when Christ was proclaimed through their voices. Legacy and Call Stewart’s arrival still speaks: God opens doors through quiet courage, holy endurance, and humble service. His life commends a steady, prayerful obedience that trusts the Lord to bear lasting fruit through ordinary faithfulness. |
