A Shepherd Takes the Lead

Jeremiah Mahalu Kisula (Pastor and Church Director)

Jeremiah Mahalu Kisula emerged as a faithful pastor and effective evangelist during a formative period for the Africa Inland Church in Tanzania. Known for steady doctrine, earnest prayer, and tireless preaching, he served congregations with a shepherd’s concern for souls and a firm confidence in the authority of Scripture. His ministry emphasized repentance, new life in Christ, and the strengthening of believers for everyday obedience.

Kasamwa–Geita, Mwanza (A Turning Point in Local Leadership)

On August 11, 1960, Kisula moved to Kasamwa–Geita in the Mwanza region to begin service as the first African Director of the Africa Inland Church of Tanzania. Kasamwa and Geita, situated in northwestern Tanzania near Lake Victoria’s broader cultural and economic corridor, became a strategic base for oversight and encouragement. His appointment represented more than an administrative change: it signaled a courageous step of spiritual maturity as local believers assumed greater responsibility for the church’s mission in their own land. The transition required wisdom, patience, and moral courage, especially where expectations, resources, and relationships were being reshaped.

Director of the Africa Inland Church of Tanzania (Oversight and Gospel Advance)

As Director, Kisula carried the weighty tasks of supervision, preaching, and pastoral encouragement across growing congregations. He sought to strengthen church discipline, nurture unity, and raise up trustworthy leaders—men grounded in Scripture and proven in character. His leadership reflected the biblical pattern of servant oversight: “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is among you, watching over them—not out of compulsion, but because it is God’s will; not out of greed, but out of eagerness” (1 Peter 5:2). His heroism was not loud or self-promoting; it was the quiet bravery of taking responsibility, speaking truth with love, and bearing burdens for the sake of Christ’s name.

Legacy (Steadfast Faith and Servant-Hearted Example)

Kisula’s life is remembered for steadfast faith, humility, and trust in God’s call. He modeled perseverance through demands that could easily weary a less anchored soul, holding to the promise: “Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). His example continues to encourage believers toward faithful ministry, mature leadership, and confident reliance on God’s strength.
