A New Name, a New Life Bernard Mizeki (Mamiyeri Mizeka Gwambe) Mamiyeri Mizeka Gwambe, later known as Bernard Mizeki, was a southern African Christian catechist and martyr remembered for steadfast faith, quiet courage, and a life shaped by Scripture and prayer. Born in what is now Mozambique, he came south as a young migrant laborer, carrying the weight of displacement and hardship. In unfamiliar places and demanding work, he encountered the gospel and found not merely a change of beliefs but a new belonging—being made part of Christ’s people. Baptism and New Allegiance (March 9, 1886) On March 9, 1886, in South Africa, he received baptism from Anglican fathers and took the name Bernard Mizeki. Baptism marked a public turning from the old life to the risen Lord, a confession of Christ before men, and a pledge to walk in newness of life. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17). This was not an empty rite but a decisive step of obedience, strengthened by the Spirit, that set the course for his later witness. A Life of Service and Teaching Afterward he devoted himself to prayer, the reading of Scripture, and steady service as a teacher of the faith. His work was often quiet: instructing converts, encouraging the fearful, and showing by consistent conduct that the gospel is not a momentary enthusiasm but a lifelong calling. His character displayed patience, humility, and a steady willingness to serve where needed, not seeking prominence but faithfulness. Mission in What Is Now Zimbabwe Mizeki’s obedience opened the way for mission northward into what is now Zimbabwe, where Christian witness faced suspicion, spiritual opposition, and social strain. He labored to make Christ known among communities unsettled by rapid change, urging hearers to trust the Savior and to forsake fear. His courage was the daily kind—staying, speaking, praying, and loving when it would have been easier to leave. Martyrdom (1896) In 1896, amid unrest and fear, he refused to renounce Christ and was killed, faithful unto death. His witness echoes the call: “Be faithful even unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.” (Revelation 2:10). Bernard Mizeki’s legacy endures as a reminder that true heroism is steadfast devotion to Jesus, even when the cost is everything. |
