A Movement Takes Root

Founding and Incorporation (Los Angeles, 1953)

On August 28, 1953, Campus Crusade for Christ was incorporated in Los Angeles under the leadership of Bill Bright. The step was practical—providing legal standing, financial accountability, and clearer governance—but it served a spiritual aim: to support a growing mission to reach college students with the gospel and form lifelong disciples. In an era of cultural change and intellectual challenge on American campuses, incorporation helped unify the ministry’s purpose and protect it from confusion, debt, or distraction.

People, Places, and Spiritual Roots

Bright’s vision was shaped through prayer, mentoring, and the conviction that the university could be a strategic mission field. Southern California—especially the Los Angeles area—became an early testing ground for outreach that relied less on spectacle and more on personal conversations, Bible study, and persistent follow-up. The “heroism” of these beginnings was often quiet: students and staff choosing holiness over popularity, courage over comfort, and generosity over self-interest, trusting God to open hearts.

Evangelism, Follow-Up, and Training

From the start, the work emphasized evangelism joined to discipleship: not merely decisions, but growth in Christ, obedience, and service. Leaders were trained to share the gospel clearly, to meet students where they were, and to build multiplying movements through mentoring and teamwork. This commitment reflected the call of Jesus: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19). Stewardship—careful handling of funds, reporting, and structure—was treated as an act of integrity before God.

Growth into Cru and Global Reach

Over time, Campus Crusade for Christ expanded beyond campuses into broader ministry efforts and international partnerships, later adopting the name Cru in many settings. Today it serves in more than 90 countries, equipping believers to live and lead for Jesus in universities, cities, and professions. Its ongoing heartbeat is captured well in Scripture: “We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.” (Colossians 1:28).
