A Life That Fueled Indigenous Missions

Birth and Burden (May 2, 1922)

May 2, 1922, marked the birth of missions pioneer Bob Finley, remembered for a steady burden for the unreached and a practical confidence that the gospel advances through faithful servants. Finley’s life reflected a kind of Christian heroism that is often quiet: enduring setbacks, praying with persistence, and refusing to treat distant peoples as projects rather than souls made in God’s image.

His convictions aligned with Christ’s command: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations… And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19–20). For Finley, the Great Commission was not a slogan but a lifelong assignment.

Christian Aid Mission (1953, Washington, D.C.)

In 1953, Finley chartered Christian Aid Mission in Washington, D.C., shaping it around a clear strategy: strengthen gospel work where it was already taking root. Rather than exporting control, the mission aimed to come alongside believers on the ground—pastors, evangelists, and church planters who already knew the language, culture, and risks of their communities.

This approach honored both stewardship and humility, recognizing that God often raises up local witnesses whose courage is forged under pressure. Their work frequently involves opposition, poverty, and isolation, yet they press on to preach Christ, disciple new believers, and plant churches where the name of Jesus is scarcely known.

Indigenous Ministry and Sacrificial Support

Finley’s vision emphasized supporting indigenous believers—men and women who can carry Christ’s name into their own towns and regions with credibility and endurance. Such partnership invites prayerful, sacrificial giving, not as mere philanthropy but as worshipful participation in God’s mission. “Each one should give as he has decided in his heart… For God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

Legacy and Present Reach (Charlottesville, Virginia)

Today the ministry serves in more than 40 countries and is headquartered in Charlottesville, Virginia. Finley’s legacy continues to encourage steadfast faith: God hears prayer, strengthens His servants, and uses ordinary obedience to accomplish extraordinary ends for His glory among the nations.
