A Life Spent Proclaiming Christ

Yohana Zebedayo (Tanzania, 2011)

On March 31, 2011, Tanzanian evangelist Yohana Zebedayo entered the Lord’s presence after years of gospel labor with the Africa Inland Church. He was known as a steady messenger rather than a celebrated figure—one who kept moving from community to community, trusting God to do lasting work through plain, faithful preaching.

Zebedayo’s sermons were Christ-centered and direct. He called hearers to repentance, warned against empty religion, and urged a living faith that shows itself in obedience, reconciliation, and love for neighbor. Where some wanted messages shaped by popularity or personal gain, he pressed the claims of Scripture and the necessity of conversion.

Gospel Labor and Quiet Heroism

Much of his work unfolded in ordinary places: village paths, small church buildings, crowded homes, and open-air gatherings where listeners arrived weary from farming or trade. He often served without applause, facing long travel, limited resources, and the slow pace of discipleship. Yet this is a distinct kind of Christian heroism—endurance, humility, and courage that refuses to drift from the message of the cross.

His ministry reflected Paul’s confidence: “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16). Zebedayo’s aim was not to display himself, but to point sinners to a sufficient Savior and to strengthen believers to stand firm.

Legacy and Encouragement to the Church

His passing reminds the Church that the harvest advances through ordinary servants empowered by an extraordinary Savior. The truest measure of a gospel worker is not fame but faithfulness—souls pointed to Christ, saints steadied in trials, and congregations taught to treasure God’s Word.

Scripture gives language for such a finish: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). Zebedayo’s witness endures in believers strengthened by his preaching and in the example of steady obedience—running with endurance and fixing “our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2).
