A Life Poured Out in Love Ann Hasseltine Judson (1789–1826) Ann Hasseltine Judson was an early American missionary known for steadfast courage, practical compassion, and quiet perseverance in gospel service. Married to Adoniram Judson in 1812, she sailed with him only twelve days later, accepting separation from home and comfort for the sake of Christ’s name. Their initial plans in India were cut short when authorities forced them to leave, and they began again in Burma (Myanmar), a land marked by spiritual darkness, unfamiliar language, and harsh conditions. Ann became a vital helper in translation work, evangelistic efforts, hospitality, and the patient, unseen labors that sustained a struggling mission. Burma, War, and Imprisonment at Ava During the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824–1826), suspicion fell on foreigners. Adoniram was seized and imprisoned at Ava, the royal city and administrative center. The prison system was brutal—disease, starvation, and neglect were common. Ann, already physically weakened and carrying grief over the loss of their little daughter, refused to abandon him. She walked miles under heat and exhaustion to bring food and supplies, negotiated with officials, pleaded for mercy, and used every lawful means to keep him alive. Her perseverance reflected a love that counted personal safety as secondary to duty and mercy. “Love is patient, love is kind… It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” (1 Corinthians 13:4,7) Death and Witness (October 24, 1826) Ann died in Burma on October 24, 1826, only thirty-seven years old, after years of costly service beside her husband. Her final season was marked by depletion rather than public acclaim—an offering poured out in ordinary obedience. Yet her life testified that endurance is not mere stubbornness but faith expressed in sacrifice. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7) She left a lasting witness of steadfast love, courage under suffering, and hope anchored beyond this world: “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness… Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven.” (Matthew 5:10,12) |
