A Life Poured Out for the Islands

Florence Selina Harriett Young (1856–1940)

Florence Selina Harriett Young died in Sydney, Australia, on May 28, 1940, after decades of tireless gospel labor among South Sea Islanders. Quiet in manner yet resolute in purpose, she spent her strength on a work few noticed at first: bringing the Word of God and daily help to Melanesian laborers far from home, often weary, exploited, and spiritually neglected.

Her life illustrates a steady kind of Christian heroism—courage expressed not in spectacle but in long obedience, prayerful dependability, and love that does not turn away from hardship.

Queensland Cane Fields and a Gospel Burden

In Queensland’s sugar districts—places such as Bundaberg and Mackay—Melanesian workers lived in camps tied to the cane industry. Young was burdened for them, not merely to relieve suffering but to see them reconciled to God through Christ. She began with Bible teaching, simple discipleship, and practical care, treating the laborers as neighbors made in God’s image and as souls for whom Christ died.

Her compassion was Scripture-shaped: she sought conversion, urged holiness, and encouraged believers to gather, pray, and read the Bible. She did not romanticize the work. She persevered when travel was difficult, when support was thin, and when cultural barriers made progress slow.

From Mission to Movement

What began in small gatherings grew into the Queensland Kanaka Mission, later the South Sea Evangelical Mission. Young trained and encouraged local believers, recognizing that lasting fruit would come through indigenous witness. She supported returning islanders as evangelists to their own people, helping them carry the gospel back to the Solomon Islands, the New Hebrides (Vanuatu), and beyond.

Her approach highlighted humility and trust in God’s power rather than mere organization: “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable. Always excel in the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58)

Legacy Across the Pacific

The enduring churches that arose across the Pacific stand as part of her legacy, yet her story also presses a personal call: “Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9)

Florence Young’s life commends humble faith, persevering service, and a gospel love that equips others to carry Christ where they live.
