A Faithful Voice Among the Piaroa

Bautista Silva (d. August 17, 1992)

Bautista Silva is remembered as the first Piaroa believer in Venezuela and as an early messenger of Christ among Piaroa families scattered across the forests and river corridors of Amazonas State. From the start of his faith, he confessed Jesus openly, refusing to hide what had changed him. His steady courage—quiet, persistent, and tested by distance and hardship—made him a living answer to the words, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7).

Silva’s evangelistic work was marked by patience. He was known to walk long stretches between villages, often by footpaths and waterways, listening first, then speaking when hearts were ready. When an opening came, he would sit through the night telling the story of Jesus—His life, His cross, His resurrection—calling hearers not merely to admire Christ, but to trust Him. In communities where outside voices could easily be dismissed, his own transformed life carried weight.

Bridge to God’s Word in Piaroa Tongues

Silva also served as a bridge between his people and Scripture. He assisted Bible translation efforts so that the message would not remain foreign, but could be heard in Piaroa speech, with its own rhythms and images. This was not only linguistic labor but spiritual service: helping mothers, fathers, and elders hear God address them plainly, without needing another culture’s vocabulary to meet the Savior.

His work reflected a simple conviction: God’s Word must be understood to be believed. As Scripture spread in familiar sounds, the gospel could be discussed in homes and taught to children with clarity.

Death and Continuing Witness

On August 17, 1992, Silva finished his earthly race. His death closed a courageous chapter, but it did not silence his testimony. Wherever Piaroa families hear Scripture and respond with faith, his labor still speaks. The messenger is gone, yet the message remains: “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17).
