A Cornerstone of Learning on Mount Scopus Mount Scopus and Jerusalem (1918) Mount Scopus rises on the northeastern ridge of Jerusalem, overlooking the Old City and the roadways leading to the Judean hills. In 1918 the region still bore the wounds of World War I and the recent transfer of control from the Ottoman Empire to the British. Jerusalem—revered by Jews and Christians alike—stood as a living reminder that God’s purposes unfold in real places, amid real upheaval. Cornerstone of the Hebrew University (July 24, 1918) On July 24, 1918, Dr. Chaim Weizmann laid the cornerstone for what would become the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The public ceremony, held in the Holy City during uncertain days, expressed confidence that learning, medicine, and disciplined inquiry could serve the common good. A cornerstone is more than a stone; it is a pledge to build patiently, to seek truth honestly, and to educate future generations for service rather than self-exaltation. Individuals in Attendance: Weizmann, Balfour, and Allenby Weizmann, a scientist and Zionist leader, helped rally international support for a Jewish national home and later became the first president of the modern State of Israel. British leaders present included Arthur Balfour, associated with the Balfour Declaration of 1917, and General Edmund Allenby, whose campaign brought Jerusalem under British control in late 1917. Their presence linked scholarship to public life and reminded onlookers that leadership carries moral weight—calling for restraint, justice, and responsibility before God. Faith, Hope, and the Pursuit of Wisdom This moment invites prayer that knowledge would be governed by reverence and humility: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10). In a city often contested, believers are urged to intercede: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ‘May those who love you prosper’” (Psalm 122:6). True heroism is not only found on battlefields but also in building institutions that heal, teach, and seek what is right. “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable…” (James 3:17). God can plant seeds of renewal even in uncertain days. |
