A Church Planter Laid to Rest

Joseph Adeyemo Taiwo

Joseph Adeyemo Taiwo was remembered among believers in Nigeria as a zealous minister and tireless church planter whose life was marked by Scripture, prayer, and steady courage. His work often took him across difficult roads and long distances, where he preached Christ, gathered new converts, and labored to see small fellowships become stable congregations. Those who knew him spoke of patient shepherding: teaching sound doctrine, urging repentance and faith, and training dependable disciples who could lead when he moved on.

His perseverance was not merely personal grit but a lived conviction that the Lord builds His church through ordinary servants. In a manner that many called quiet heroism, he embraced sacrifice—time, comfort, and strength—so that communities could be anchored in the Word and in united prayer. The pattern of his ministry resembled the apostolic charge to keep going when the work is demanding: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7).

Burial (23 September 1965)

On September 23, 1965, believers gathered in Nigeria to bury Taiwo, and the day became more than a farewell. The assembly—drawn from the congregations he had strengthened and the newer works he had helped begin—stood as a living witness that the gospel outlives the messenger. In prayers and sober remembrance, grief mingled with gratitude: the Lord had used one man’s obedience to establish lasting testimony in places where the name of Christ had once been little known.

The burial also carried a steady hope that did not deny sorrow but placed it under a greater promise. Jesus’ words were often recalled in such moments: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies” (John 11:25).

Legacy

Taiwo’s legacy was seen in the people he discipled and in congregations that continued to read the Scriptures, pray earnestly, and preach Christ with clarity. His life reinforced a simple lesson for the church: seeds sown in weakness, watered by prayer, can bear fruit long after the sower is gone, because the Lord Himself rewards faithful service.
