A Banner for Christ’s Mission George Washington Doane (1799–1859) Born May 27, 1799, in Trenton, New Jersey, George Washington Doane grew into a churchman marked by earnest conviction and public courage. Educated at Union College in Schenectady, New York, he entered ministry with a pastor’s heart and a soldier’s steadiness—resolved to serve Christ with mind, voice, and disciplined labor. Missionary Voice and Hymn Writer Doane belonged to a generation facing a widening world: young America expanding westward, global trade increasing, and nations opening to the gospel. He pressed believers to look beyond comfortable borders and to take seriously Christ’s command: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19). His missionary appeals called for prayer, sacrifice, and steady giving, not as religious enthusiasm but as obedience rooted in love for the lost. He also strengthened the church’s worship through hymns that carried doctrine into memory. “Fling Out the Banner! Let It Float” sounded a clear summons to witness—bold, public, and hopeful. “Softly Now the Light of Day” offered a gentler service, teaching believers to end the day with repentance, peace, and trust in God’s keeping. In both, he joined courage with reverence: the outward work of mission supported by inward devotion. Bishop, Educator, and Builder in New Jersey Consecrated Bishop of New Jersey in 1832, Doane labored to form congregations and to cultivate faithful leadership. In Burlington, he founded St. Mary’s Hall (1837) and later Burlington College (1846), aiming to shape young hearts in duty, learning, and reverence. He understood that the church’s future depends not only on sermons but on schooling that trains conscience, strengthens character, and honors God. Legacy of Steady Faithfulness Doane’s life commends perseverance more than celebrity. “Therefore… be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord…” (1 Corinthians 15:58). His example calls believers to courageous witness, worship that forms the soul, and patient labor for God’s kingdom—until the banner is lifted in every place. |
