Good News Translation
Everyone, young and old, ran together to the gate. No one could believe that Judith had come back. They opened the gate for her and her slave and welcomed them. Then, when they had lit a fire to give some light and had gathered around the two women,

They all ran together, both small and great, for it seemed unbelievable that she had returned. They opened the gate and welcomed them. Then they lit a fire to give light, and gathered around them.

Contemporary English Version
Then all the people of Bethulia, both young and old, hurried to the gate--no one could believe that Judith had returned safely. They opened the gate and greeted Judith and her servant woman. Someone started a bonfire, and everyone gathered around the two women.

From a distance, Judith shouted to the guards at the gates: “Open! Open the gate! God, our God, is with us. Once more he has shown his strength in Israel and his power against the enemy, as he has today!”
