Good News Translation
So King Demetrius immediately appointed Nicanor, who was the commander of his elephant forces, to be governor of Judea, and sent him there

He immediately chose Nicanor, who had been in command of the elephants, appointed him governor of Judea, and sent him off

Contemporary English Version
that he immediately appointed Nicanor to be the new governor of Judea. This was the same Nicanor who had been the commander of his war elephants. Then Demetrius sent him to Judea
