Good News Translation
The huge animals were distributed among the infantry units. A thousand men, protected by chain armor and bronze helmets, were stationed with each elephant. Each animal was also accompanied by a special force of 500 cavalry,

They distributed the animals among the phalanxes; with each elephant they stationed a thousand men armed with coats of mail, and with brass helmets on their heads; and five hundred picked horsemen were assigned to each beast.

Others then led the elephants to their places among the troops. Five hundred expert cavalry and 1,000 troops with bronze helmets and metal armor worked with each animal.
