Good News Translation
This great defeat came about because the Jewish commanders wanted to be heroes and refused to obey Judas and his brothers.

Thus the people suffered a great rout because, thinking to do a brave deed, they did not listen to Judas and his brothers.

This battle was lost because Azariah and Joseph disobeyed Judas and his brothers by trying to win a victory for themselves.
