Good News Translation
When the enemy soldiers learned that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, they were panic-stricken and fled, leaving their campfires burning.

When the enemy heard that Jonathan and his troops were prepared for battle, they were afraid and were terrified at heart; so they kindled fires in their camp and withdrew.

Contemporary English Version
But the king's troops lost their nerve and were frightened when someone informed them that the Jews were ready for their attack. So they lit campfires and ran away.
